STAFF REPORT
ALAMOSA — The Colorado State Patrol was busy midweek rushing from one traffic accident scene to the next across the San Luis Valley as drivers attempted to cope with a spring storm that caused icy, slushy and snowy roads throughout the region.
“The majority of the crashes were due to people driving too fast for the road conditions,” said CSP Sgt. George Dingfelder.
The most serious crash happened on Colo. Hwy. 17 near mile marker 34, southwest of Mogote in Conejos County at approximately 7:40 a.m.
According to the accident report, John Person, 63, of Antonito, Colo. was northbound on the highway in a 1998 Lexus SUV when he lost control of the vehicle on the icy roadway. The sport utility vehicle ran off the West side of the road and rolled one and one-quarter time, coming to rest on its right side.
Person was taken to Conejos County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The front seat passenger, Jan Person, 62, of Antonito, was taken to the same hospital to be treated for bumps and bruises. The right rear passenger in the vehicle, Ora Fry, 70, of Antonito, was partially ejected and pinned in the crashed SUV. Antonito Fire / Rescue responded to the location and extricated Fry who was then transported to Conejos County Hospital and later flown via air ambulance to Swedish Medical Center in Denver, Colo.
The state patrol report indicates Fry suffered broken lower extremities in the accident.
John Person was cited for careless driving resulting in injuries. The report indicates while both Jan and John Person were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, Fry was not.
Troopers from Alamosa responded to seven other traffic accidents in the Valley Wednesday but report none of the other crashes resulted in injuries.
